World Book Day 2023

World Book Day was celebrated across our Trust promoting the importance of reading and reading for pleasure, along with lots of fun activities and some fabulous costumes across all schools. 

At Wild Bank Community School Stalybridge, the pupils shared their favourite stories and took inspiration from their favourite book characters in their art lessons. Some pupils took part in the design a National Book Token competition to share their creativity and their love for reading by designing their own gift cards.

At Yew Tree Primary School Dukinfield, pupils enjoyed a visit from author Andrea Bowker, pupils particularly enjoyed hearing stories about her character ‘Rab the Crab’. The catering team at Mellors provided pupils with a book themed lunch.

At Gamesley Primary School Glossop, they held their annual bookplate competition – the winning designs are used for all book prizes in school and a potato book character competition. Mel from Dark Peak Books came into school so every child was able to exchange their token for a book.

At Pinfold Primary School Hattersley, pupils came dressed to school in their pyjamas with a focus upon reading for pleasure. They enjoyed getting cosy with a hot chocolate whilst sharing and reading books together.  Some classes joined a special pupil forum assembly in response to the big question of the day ‘what is the purpose of reading?’

At Discovery Academy Hattersley, pupils enjoyed a visit from Jane Preece, as well as reading her story ‘Oliver Lum and The Prickly Plum’, she also shared her journey of how she became an author, showing that dreams can come true with determination and hard work!

At Inspire Academy Ashton under Lyne, pupils enjoyed meeting author Fay Evans and listening to her story ‘Dave the Whale’, some classes had fun acting out the story. They also had a visit from published poet Matt Goodfellow who ran a fantastic poetry workshop for pupils which encouraged pupils to be creative and write for themselves.

At Arundale Primary School Hyde, some pupils created their own adventure stories which they then shared with each other in class and staff from Tameside Library Service visited to run a book quiz for pupils.
